Origins of the Sanctuary

The Sanctuary was founded by Blessed Bartolo Longo, who in Pompei devoted his life to religion and charity. The first church opened in 1875, and around that original core grew the imposing basilica that dominates the square today.

The basilica and its bell tower

An interior rich in marbles and gifts from every part of the world tells of the international devotion of the place; its bell tower, about 80 metres tall, is among the tallest in Italy. The wide open square in front welcomes pilgrims and grand celebrations.

What to visit

Besides the basilica you can visit the rooms dedicated to Bartolo Longo, the museum and the hospitality works connected with the Sanctuary. Daily services keep the place alive in every season, with special moments in the Marian months and in May.

Adding it to your visit

The Sanctuary lies in the heart of Pompei, a few minutes on foot from the station and close to the ruins. It is a perfect stop to pair with the archaeological visit: spirituality, art and small-town life in a single walk.
